OBJECTIVE : To observe the therapeutic effect of warm needle moxibustion on chronic non-bacterial prostatitis. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-five cases were randomly divided into a warm needle moxibustion group (n = 42), an acupuncture group (n = 41) and a western medicine group (n = 42). The warm needle moxibustion group was treated with acupuncture at Shenshu (BL 23), Ganshu (BL 18), Zhibian (BL 54) with no retention of the needles, and warm needle moxibustion on Guanyuan (CV 4), Zhongji (CV 3), Yinlingquan (SP 9), Sanyin-jiao (SP 6), once daily; the acupuncture group with acupuncture at the same acupoints as the warm needle moxibus tion group with no moxibustion; and the western medicine group with oral administration of Prostat Tablets, one tablet each time, twice daily. The therapeutic effects and scores of chronic prostatitis symptom indexes (NIH-CPSI) were compared. RESULTS: The total effective rate was 88.10% in the warm needle moxibustion group, 63.41% in the acupuncture group and 66.67% in the western medicine group, the warm needle moxibustion group being better than the acupuncture group and the western medicine group (both P < 0.05). After treatment, the scores of NIH-CPSI was 11.92 +/- 7.11 in the warm needle moxibustion group, 16.08 +/- 6.83 in the acupuncture group and 15.66 +/- 5.88 in the western medicine group, with significant decreases in the 3 groups as compared with those before treatment (all P < 0.01), and after treatment, the score in the warm needle moxibustion group was significant different to that of the acupuncture group or the western medicine group (both P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The warm needle moxibustion has a good therapeutic effect on chronic non-bacterial prostatitis.
